A few words about us
Sands Cleaners sprang from parent’s concern for their children’s health and the health of their world.
Back In 2005, Kevin and his wife, Michelle, were expecting a boy. With the excitement and nervousness of first time parents, they read everything they could about pregnancy and infant care. What they discovered alarmed them-books and articles repeatedly cautioned pregnant women and parents of babies to avoid dry cleaning because of the harmful chemicals used.
Throughout the 14 years of working in dry cleaning industry, he never really thought about the chemical called “PERC” (also known as tetrachloroethylene, perchloroethylene, and PCE) which most of cleaners use up to this date and not to mention, PERC is classified as a hazardous air contaminant by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and must be handled as a hazardous waste. To prevent it from getting into drinking water, dry cleaners that use PERC must take special precautions against site contamination. Landlords are becoming increasingly reluctant to allow dry cleaners to operate in their buildings. When released into the air, PERC can contribute to smog when it reacts with other volatile organic carbon substances. California declared perchloroethylene a toxic chemical in 1991, and its use soon will become illegal in most states.
“Their has to be better ways to dry clean the garments without using harmful chemical called “PERC”. With this in his mind, Kevin hunted for better option. Consumer Reports published a comparison of dry cleaning methods, both "green" and conventional. A new technology using Isoparaffin Hydrocarbon came out on top, ranked #1 for cleaning clothing best while being gentler to the fabric. When Kevin saw that it was also the most benign to both human health and the environment, he knew he'd found his solution.
Kevin & Michelle were inspired by the virtues of this new technology and committed themselves to bringing it to our communities.
